Our NHS could be up for grabs in a trade deal. It's impossible to take it "off the table" without strong new legislation to end privatisation. We Own It is campaigning with Keep Our NHS Public and many other organisations to make this happen.
Dear Prime Minister, More than 720,000 people have signed the petition calling for our NHS to be kept out of a US trade deal. There isn’t much that unites this country as much as our love for our National Health Service.
I’m sure you were as alarmed as I was when Trump proclaimed that ‘everything is on the table’ in a potential trade deal, including the NHS. Now, US Ambassador Woody Johnson has recently said the NHS is ‘fair game’ in trade negotiations.
You have been very clear that you don’t want to put our NHS on the negotiating table for a trade deal with the US. I’m very glad that you’re committed to this!
Unfortunately, the NHS is already on the table, and more needs to be done to take it off.
Because of the privatisation and competition that already exists in our health service, the door is already open to US companies providing healthcare.
As things stand, the only way to protect our NHS from a trade deal is by introducing new legislation which ends privatisation. Here’s a short briefing explaining why this is the case.
Unless we explicitly protect the NHS, measures like ‘standstill’ and ‘ratchet’ clauses in new deals will ensure further privatisation and prevent any reversal once it has taken place.
Please protect the NHS from trade deals by ending privatisation.
Words aren’t enough - we need action!
I look forward to your response.
All of us will have to work together if we’re going to protect our NHS. Will you join us?
Yes, sign me up!
I don’t need adding because I’m already signed up, or I don’t want to be added
